Public education is the foundation of opportunity in this country. But right now, the Trump Administration is doing everything it can to turn our schools into another battle ground for their culture war while defunding and destabilizing critical programs. In Congress, Scott will continue to be a fierce defender of public schools – not just resisting and undoing Trump’s agenda, but pushing forward to create a better education system across the country.
Scott believes every child deserves an education that is responsive to their needs. Scott has long stood up for our schools and our students and not only when it’s easy. Scott was an early supporter of restoring eighth grade algebra when the school district first eliminated it in 2015. He has long supported maintaining merit-based admissions at Lowell High, and he was the first elected official in San Francisco to endorse the school board recall, when our school district was at risk of coming off the rails. We need to advance equity while maintaining standards of excellence, and Scott has a plan to make sure our schools have what they need.
It is the federal government’s responsibility to create the conditions for students to thrive. This starts with recognizing that school districts cannot backfill critical programs when the federal government fails to commit the resources it promises. Fully funding programs for students with disabilities and other needs allows schools to dedicate funding toward other activities, increasing the quality of education for all students. And beyond funding, Scott believes the federal government needs to better use its power to train and retain talented educators, especially in high-cost areas like San Francisco.
