Defending Democracy

Defending Democracy With The Bold Action It Demands

January 6th was not an aberration. It was a preview. Trump and his MAGA allies have made clear they will use the levers of federal power to stay in power, punish political opponents, and roll back the voting rights that generations of Americans fought and died to secure. Scott has spent his career taking on the most powerful interests in California and winning. He will bring that same fight to Washington.

The assault on voting rights is real and ongoing. Republican-controlled states have spent years making it harder to vote: closing polling places, purging voter rolls, gerrymandering districts to lock in minority rule, and passing restrictions designed to keep people away from the polls. The Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act. Congress has had the power to fix this for years. It has done nothing.

Scott will push to change that. He will fight to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and restore the protections the Supreme Court stripped away. And he will work to eliminate the Senate filibuster, the procedural rule that has become the go-to weapon for blocking every reform that a majority of Americans support.

Money in politics is corrupting our democracy. The Citizens United decision opened the door to unlimited, untraceable dark money flooding our elections and drowning out the voices of ordinary voters. Scott supports a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and will fight for real campaign finance reform so elections are decided by voters, not corporations and billionaires.

In Congress, Scott will work to:

  • Pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, restoring the protections that Republican-controlled courts and legislatures have spent years dismantling.
  • Mandate independent congressional redistricting in all 50 states.
  • Make the U.S. Department of Justice more independent of the President so that DOJ never again becomes the President’s personal law firm.
  • Support the elimination of the Senate filibuster so democracy reform can actually pass, not be killed by a procedural rule that has become a tool for minority rule.
  • Work to overturn Citizens United and get dark money out of elections because politicians should be accountable to voters, not to billionaires.
  • Ban congressional stock trading
  • Expand the Supreme Court to take back control of one of our most important institutions from far-right ideologues.
  • Grant statehood to Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, so the roughly 3.2 million Americans who live there finally have full representation in Congress.

Scott's Past Legislation

  • SB 27 (2019) Required every presidential candidate to publicly release five years of tax returns in order to appear on California's primary ballot, taking on Trump's refusal to honor four decades of presidential transparency precedent.
