Democratic grassroots activists vote overwhelmingly to endorse Wiener for State Senate District 11 – a major step toward Democratic Party endorsement
San Francisco, CA – On Sunday, January 31st, Supervisor Scott Wiener earned 80% of the vote at the California Democratic Party (CDP) pre-endorsement conference, a meeting of hundreds of Democratic, grassroots activists from Senate District 11, taking a major step toward the Democratic Party endorsement. That pre-endorsement vote will be ratified at the CDP statewide convention February 27th-29th.
These activists represent the core values and grassroots outreach that has made the Democratic Party so strong in the Bay Area. The conference delegates also include members of San Francisco’s chartered Democratic clubs such as the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club; the SF Young Democrats; The Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club; the Asian Pacific Democratic Club; and the Mission Democratic Club.
“As a lifelong Democrat and former Chair of the San Francisco Democratic party, I couldn’t be more proud to earn the support of these grassroots activists,” stated Wiener. “They work tirelessly to elect leaders who will fight to protect our environment, expand affordable housing, ensure access to quality, affordable health care, fight to improve our schools, and protect a woman’s right to choose.”
Wiener’s strong pre-endorsement vote results follow recent polling showing him 15 points ahead of opponent Jane Kim, and 13 points ahead of Kim among women. When voters are asked whether characteristics like ‘being a strong leader’ and ‘being effective and getting things done’ better described Wiener or Kim, voters chose Wiener over Kim by a 2:1 margin.
In addition to earning 80% of the CDP pre-endorsement conference vote, Supervisor Wiener’s record of leading on the issues of affordable housing, transportation, clean energy and public safety has earned him the support of Attorney General Kamala Harris, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Senator Mark Leno, the California League of Conversation Voters, Board of Equalization Members Fiona Ma, Assessor Carmen Chu, and many others.
