Strong fundraising numbers come on heels of polling showing Wiener with 15-point lead, as well as major step toward the Democratic Party endorsement by securing landslide 80% vote of delegates at grassroots endorsement caucus
San Francisco, CA (February 1, 2016) - In the first campaign finance disclosure report in the race for State Senate District 11, Supervisor Scott Wiener raised a substantial $852,287.99 from a broad and diverse range of donors.
Among Wiener’s nearly 1,200 donors - over 75% of whom live in San Francisco and a majority of whom donated $250 or less - are musicians, filmmakers, and artists; nurses, physicians, and caregivers; a pilates teacher, dog walker, and veterinarian; non-profit employees, and members of organized labor.
“Supervisor Wiener’s strong fundraising numbers reflect broad support for his effective leadership on the issues that impact residents: housing affordability, transit reliability, healthcare access, public education, and protecting our environment. This cross-section of the community believes Scott will be the more effective leader on these critical issues facing our city, region, and state,” stated Wiener campaign consultant Maggie Muir.
Wiener’s fundraising follows recently released polling showing him 15 points ahead of opponent Jane Kim, and 13 points ahead among women. When voters are asked whether characteristics like ‘being a strong leader’ and ‘being effective and getting things done’ better described Wiener or Kim, voters chose Wiener over Kim by a 2:1 margin.
Building on his strong position in fundraising and polling, Wiener took a huge step toward becoming the officially endorsed Democratic Party candidate in the race, by earning 80% of the vote at Sunday's California Democratic Party (CDP) pre-endorsement conference, a meeting of hundreds of Democratic, grassroots activists from Senate District 11. That pre-endorsement vote will be ratified at the CDP convention February 27th-29th.
Other highlights from Wiener's fundraising report include:
- 1,161 donors
- 77% of money raised from inside Senate District 11
- A majority of Wiener's donations are $250 or less, more than a quarter are $100 or less, and 75% are $500 or less
The fundraising filing period runs from 7/1/15 through 12/31/15.
In addition to strong fundraising numbers, Supervisor Wiener’s record of leading on the issues of affordable housing, transportation, environmental sustainability, healthcare access, and public education has earned him the support of Attorney General Kamala Harris, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, Senator Mark Leno, the California League of Conversation Voters, Board of Equalization Member Fiona Ma, Assessor Carmen Chu, City Attorney Dennis Herrera, a majority of the San Francisco Board of Education members, all five members of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, and many others.
