As a member of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee, Scott Wiener is committed to strengthening the Democratic Party in San Francisco. Scott believes it is critical for the San Francisco Democratic Party to be strong to ensure good results for Democrats in local, statewide, and national elections. During his four years on the committee, and almost two years as chairman, Scott has worked hard to accomplish this goal.
The party must register more Democratic voters in San Francisco. In recent years, "decline to state" and third party registrations have increased in the City. The party must provide these voters with a reason to return to the fold to convince them that a progressive political agenda will best be achieved by having a strong and broad-based Democratic Party. On a year-round basis, the local party must have a concerted operation to register Democrats. We should not wait until election time to do so. The party also must engage in an educational campaign to explain to voters why it is important to register and vote Democratic.
The party must turn out Democratic voters and non-Democrats who are likely to vote Democratic. All the Democratic voters in the world won't win an election unless we turn them out to vote. The local party must play a key role in getting out the vote. By doing so, the party can ensure consistently good results for local, statewide, and national Democratic candidates.
The party must work effectively with local Democratic clubs. San Francisco is fortunate to have a large and diverse array of Democratic political clubs. These clubs contribute to the City's vibrant and colorful political culture and serve as the backbone of our party infrastructure. The clubs frequently disagree on particular issues and candidacies, which reflects the positive and important diversity of our city. But, despite those differences, there is a significant amount of common ground among the clubs. The local party should take a lead in finding common ground among the Democratic clubs to advance core Democratic issues and values, particularly on a state and national level. In addition, the local party should reach out to non-Democratic groups that support Democratic core values in order to advance our agenda.
The party must have sufficient funding to carry out these goals. When the Democratic Party is adequately funded, it does terrific work. When it is inadequately funded, it is limited in what it is able to accomplish. For the party to reach its potential and to be a catalyst for change, it must be funded appropriately.
Over the past few years, we have made significant progress toward these goals. We have established a year-round voter registration operation, we have engaged in effective voter turnout and education activities, we have worked effectively with the local Democratic clubs, and we have established financial stability for the Party. Over the next few years, we need to take it to the next level to ensure that the Democratic Party has a long-term positive presence in San Francisco.
