Wiener earns overwhelming support of Democratic grassroots activists by securing 80% of the vote in key strategic endorsement for State Senate race
San Francisco, CA – (February 29, 2016) On Sunday, February 28th Supervisor Scott Wiener earned the official State Senate endorsement of the Democratic Party at the Party’s statewide convention in San Jose. Wiener is now the official party standard-bearer in the race.
The Democratic Party endorsement is a key win and important strategic factor in the race for State Senate District 11 (San Francisco and northern San Mateo County). With Democratic Party registration in the district one of the highest Democratic registration percentages in the state - the endorsement is an important point of information for Democratic voters that Scott Wiener represents the progressive values of the Democratic Party, and has earned the support of the grassroots activists who work diligently to support the Party’s values.
“As a lifelong Democrat and former Chair of the San Francisco Democratic Party, I couldn’t be more honored to be the Party’s officially endorsed candidate for State Senate,” stated Wiener. “The Democratic Party works tirelessly to protect our environment, expand affordable housing, ensure access to quality, affordable health care, fight to improve our schools, and protect a woman’s right to choose.”
Prior to the official endorsement vote, Wiener earned 80% of the vote at the California Democratic Party endorsing caucus in late January, a meeting of hundreds of Democratic, grassroots activists from Senate District 11, taking a major step toward the Democratic Party endorsement.
“Scott Wiener's work ethic and commitment to the values of the Democratic Party are extraordinary,” stated Mary Jung, chair of the San Francisco Democratic Party. “Scott works every day to address the key issues of our time, such as climate change, income inequality, and infrastructure investment. Scott is extremely deserving of our party's endorsement, and we will work hard to get him elected to represent us in the State Senate.”
“Scott Wiener will be an effective leader for our region in Sacramento, fighting for better transportation, improved support for affordable housing, environmental sustainability, and our public schools and healthcare system," said Jeffrey Adair, chair of the San Mateo County Democratic Party.
Wiener’s Democratic Party endorsement builds upon Wiener’s strong fundraising numbers of over $1 million raised to date; and poll numbers showing Wiener 15 points ahead of opponent Jane Kim, and 13 points ahead of Kim among women. When voters are asked whether characteristics like ‘being a strong leader’ and ‘being effective and getting things done’ better described Wiener or Kim, voters chose Wiener over Kim by a 2:1 margin.
In addition to Wiener’s key Democratic Party endorsement, his record as an effective leader on issues of affordable housing, transportation, healthcare, education, clean energy, water policy, and public safety has earned him the support of Attorney General Kamala Harris, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, Senator Mark Leno, the California League of Conversation Voters, Board of Equalization Members Fiona Ma, Assessor Carmen Chu, and many others.
